SkinIO

Mole mapping is a visual skin health record that monitors and tracks changes in the skin over time. Unique mole mapping algorithms identify and record moles and skin lesions allowing doctors to detect changes to skin anomalies sooner and with more precision. Mole mapping using SkinIO is a beneficial tool in the early detection of skin cancer.

Dermoscopy

In an effort to provide patients with the best health outcomes, early detection of skin cancer is the standard of care. Patients can have optimal health outcomes when dermatologists are able to offer enhanced data collection and diagnostic accuracy.

One of the tools that increases diagnostic accuracy and early detection is dermoscopy. A widely used non-invasive diagnostic tool, the dermoscope illuminates and magnifies skin lesions allowing the dermatologist to observe and analyze without obstruction. Dermatologists are able to diagnose melanoma and other benign and malignant skin lesions, including: angiomas, nevi, basal cell carcinomas, cylindromas, dermatofibromas, skin conditions of the scalp and hair and squamous cell carcinomas. The dermoscope takes digital images that can be stored to monitor any changes in skin lesions. Dermoscopy remains the diagnostic tool of choice for quick and precise imaging of skin lesions.

Teledermatology

Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center located in Newport News and Williamsburg, VA, is pleased to offer two teledermatology web based platform options for your convenience. For current patients unable to come into the office, teledermatology allows us to care for patients over video teleconference or through digital image uploads. We can provide the same great care from the comfort of your home. If you are a current patient and experiencing an urgent dermatologic need, teledermatology is an effective and efficient way of getting the care you need right when you need it.

Photodynamic Therapy

At Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center, we offer photodynamic therapy which is a two stage treatment for destroying cancerous and precancerous cells. A photosensitizer (medication) is applied to the skin and a specific wavelength of light is activated to target the cancerous and precancerous tissue. Photodynamic therapy can be used to treat other skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. Studies have shown that light-based therapy engages the bodyโ€™s own immune system to help fight off and destroy precancerous and cancerous cells.

GENETIC TESTING

DecisionDx

In a continual effort to identify, assess risks, educate, diagnose and treat melanoma in its earliest stages, Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center offers genetic testing using Castle Biosciences and DermTech products.

DecisionDX Genetic Testing from Castle Biosciences helps predict the risk of recurrence or metastasis of melanoma. By collecting a gene expression profile (GEP) using biologic information from the tumor, doctors are able to more accurately predict a metastasis in Stage I, II and III patients. With this knowledge, doctors can change the treatment plan for patients to garner more successful health outcomes.

DermTech

Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center offers Pigmented Lesion Assay (PLA) which is a non-invasive gene expression test to identify skin lesions at risk for melanoma. For patients meeting certain criteria, we apply adhesive patches to collect skin cells from the questionable lesion to send away for analysis. The skin patch test can determine if the mole is benign or if it has genomic risk factors of melanoma and needs further investigation.
