What is Exfoliation?

Approximately every 30 days, your skin sheds dead cells to make room for new ones. In some cases, these dead cells fail to shed completely, which is where exfoliation comes in. Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. The cells are often removed using a chemical, an exfoliation tool, or a granular substance.

exfoliationWhat Does Exfoliation Do?

Exfoliation helps improve the appearance of your skin, both in the short and long-term. Exfoliation can leave your skin looking brighter, as well as enhance absorption, which improves the effectiveness of many skin care products. Exfoliating regularly can also help prevent clogged pores and reduce acne breakouts.

When looking at its long-term effects, one can see that you can also benefit in that regard. Long-term exfoliation may lead to an increase in your body’s collagen production. Collagen is a protein that promotes elastic and vibrant skin. This means long-term exfoliation can lead to you having glowing skin and fewer fine lines or sagging.

Can I Exfoliate at Home?

There are multiple methods to exfoliate at home, but you have to be careful with the method you choose as not every skin type is fit for every type of exfoliation and you may end up doing damage to your skin if you exfoliate incorrectly. Keep the following in mind before you exfoliate at home:

  • Exfoliating when using certain skincare products, like retinol, may worsen dry skin or cause acne breakouts.
  • Be gentle with your skin while exfoliating, and make sure not to exfoliate if you have any open wounds.
  • Make sure you select a method that is suitable for your skin type.
  • Apply moisturizer when you are finished exfoliating to keep your skin hydrated.

Should I Contact a Dermatologist?

Contact a Dermatologist if you are unsure about your skin type to avoid any damage to your skin. You can also contact a Dermatologist if you want more professional care for your skin, as opposed to do-it-yourself options.
