ABOUT MOLE MAPPING

Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Center utilizes the latest technology available to document and track changes in a patientโs skin over time.
Mole mapping is a skin health monitoring system that aims to identify changes in the skin and detect changes early by having a digital image record. This monitoring technology is on the forefront of early skin cancer detection.
Mole mapping uses the most advanced technology to provide the earliest diagnosis for melanoma in high risk patients. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer and it is curable when detected early. Mole mapping using SkinIO as a surveillance program provides dermatologists and patients a recorded visual history for reference.ย
HOW DOES MOLE MAPPING WORK?

SkinIO is performed in the office by a trained medical assistant or nurse. Using a mobile app and total body photography, images of your skin including: face, torso, legs and arms are taken, processed and analyzed. SkinIO uses proprietary algorithms to find moles and lesions on your skin. The doctor is able to track and analyze skin anomalies over time. As the patient, you have access to and can securely view the images of your skin so that you can track changes in your skin before your annual visit.ย ย ย
SkinIO platform integrates machine learning, also known as AI, or artificial intelligence, for the purposes of tracking and monitoring. It is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace your dermatologist. SkinIO enhances your doctor’s capabilities of early detection.ย
How Long Does Mole Mapping Take?
Total body photography takes about 5 minutes to complete.
Once your images are taken, they will be securely processed and available for you and your doctor to use during your skin exam.
SkinIO empowers patients with a visual skin health record to reference any changes that may occur.ย
ADVANTAGES OF MOLE MAPPING
Anyone is a candidate for mole mapping; however, it is highly useful in patients who are at increased risk of skin cancer and for individuals who have:
- More than 50-100 moles
- Moles that are atypical in appearance, large, unusual colors or shape
- History of melanoma
- Family history of melanoma
- Fair skinned patients who have been severely sunburned
- Moles on the back
The advantages of mole mapping include:
- Providing a previous record allows doctors to determine if any changes have occurred in a skin lesion
- Helping the doctor determine when a lesion has the criteria for removal and can be done at the earliest stage possible improving outcome results for patients
- Reassuring patients who have family history or genetic markers for melanoma
DO I NEED SKINIO?
![]()
SkinIO is a useful tool to monitor patients who have a significant amount of moles as well as patients who have a history of skin cancer or melanoma. Theย Skin Cancer Foundationย states that 70-80% of melanomas appear as new spots on the skin, while 20-30% develop from changes in an existing mole.
Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Center is proud to offer the latest technology to monitor and track changes in your skin health. We encourage patients to advocate for their health and SkinIO allows physicians and patients to work together to establish a visual history of your skin health enabling more accurate assessments and early detection capabilities.
