Beauty sleep is a real thing. In fact, sleep is one of the best ways to take care of your skin! However, it does take some effort on our part. To get the most out of our beauty sleep, we should be sure to follow a few simple tips.

What happens to your skin when you sleep?

Sleep

While you sleep, your skin is still very much active. Your skin regenerates cells while you sleep. Your pores continue to absorb oil and bacteria, and produce sweat and oils. It’s important to take steps during the day that help your skin stay healthy and hydrated at night. The following tips will minimize your risk of acne, oily or dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, or red and inflamed skin.

1. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. A good goal for a healthy adult is to drink 8 cups of water a day.

2. Avoid drinking excessive caffeine and alcohol, as both of these can dehydrate your skin.

3. Remove your makeup and cleanse your face before bed. Makeup, dirt, oil and bacteria will be absorbed through your pores.

4. Apply a moisturizer before bedtime. Choose a moisturizer that is hydrating and contains ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Ask our providers at Peninsula Dermatology what brands of moisturizer we recommend!

5. Use a satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases can be drying for the skin.

6. Keep your bedroom cool. A cooler room will help you sleep better and will also be gentler on your skin.

Following these tips can help keep your skin hydrated and healthy overnight! For any questions or concerns about your skincare routine, consult our experts at Peninsula Dermatology.
