Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center’s History: Dedicated Founders and a Lasting Vision
Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center’s journey began in 1987 when Dr. Susan Mackel and Dr. Douglas Nelson, a respected husband-and-wife team, founded the practice, originally known as Dermatology Specialists. Their shared vision was simple yet profound: to be the trusted resource for medical and surgical dermatologic care for patients and referring physicians alike. They committed to creating a professional yet family-oriented environment, combining their compassionate approach with cutting-edge technology to address all aspects of dermatologic health.
With an emphasis on personalized, compassionate care, Dr. Mackel and Dr. Nelson quickly established a reputation for excellence. Patients from southside Virginia to Richmond and even the Northern Neck soon began to seek our expertise. Their legacy of trust, care and innovative treatment continues to shape our approach today.
In 1998, our practice reached an important milestone with the arrival of Dr. Christine Marcuson, a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. Dr. Marcuson brought Mohs micrographic surgery to the peninsula, allowing us to treat skin cancer with greater precision and effectiveness. This addition further enhanced our reputation, and as our patient base grew, so did our team. Board-certified specialists joined our practice, and we opened an additional office in Williamsburg to serve even more patients.
After the beloved Dr. Mackel and Dr. Nelson retired, we continued their legacy, upholding the values and vision that had guided us since the beginning. In 2020, we embraced a new name—Peninsula Dermatology Skin Cancer Surgery Center. This change reflects our expanded expertise in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment while honoring our commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care. Today, our entire team is dedicated to the same friendly, compassionate and state-of-the-art care our patients have come to expect from us.

- Dr. Christine Marcuson is a Williamsburg native and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, specializing in Mohs surgery, general dermatologic surgery and laser treatments.
- Dr. Jason D. Mazzurco is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon who specializes in skin cancer diagnosis, Mohs surgery and reconstructive surgery.
- Dr. Emily R. Himes offers general medical and surgical dermatology services to patients of all ages, delivering care with compassion and expertise.
- Dr. Donald W. Shenenberger practices general medical and surgical dermatology and is also an Assistant Professor of Dermatology, contributing to the advancement of dermatologic knowledge and care.
- Dr. Joselin D. Tacastacas is an experienced dermatologist with a history of leadership in dermatology residency and provides specialized care for a range of skin conditions.
- Dr. Larry A. Evans brings a wealth of experience from his 24-year Navy career, focusing on dermoscopy and general dermatology.
